For Cod and Country, ... What we eat, and how we eat, affects all of us. The new environmentalism... We have not stewarded our resources well. We have depleted the resources of our oceans and we have lost costal communities in the process. Managing our food sources, in this case fish, is essential.
This book is about stewardship and sustainability but it is primarily a recipe book. It is packed with recipes for cooking seafood all year long. Enjoying the seasonal freshness of fish, along with seasonal fruits and vegetables. Chef Barton Seaver provides instruction and insight in the selection and preparation of sustainable seafood and pairs the seafood with seasonal side dishes.
The images of the prepared dishes are large and enticing. The recipes are easy to follow and flavorful. Some favorites from the book are "Chilled Poached Salmon with Shaved Cabbage and Cilantro Slaw" and "Halibut with Ginger-Raisin Crust. Some recipes, such as the "Amerjack on Sweet Potato Salad with Scallion and Honey", are more suited to those living on the east or west coast where unusual species of fish are more readily availble, but the author provides fish substitution suggestions as well.
This book will keep a sustainable-minded seafood-lover cooking all year long.

Review Organic Life for All  A Slice of Organic Life Editor-in_Chief: Sheherazade Goldsmith DK Publishing 352 pp.,$25.00 In a large print, glossy picture format, this book is a collection of tips to live life more in harmony with nature. It focuses on the world –changing power of doing small things. The “small things” in the book range from growing your own food, making your own cleaning products,, to raising your own chickens, geese, and cows. Some tips are not so “small” and are geared more for those living in rural areas. Others are tips are geared for urban dwellers living in small spaces. The books contents are basic, simple and straightforward. The pictures are large and beautiful. It is a good overview of topics for someone beginning to investigate how they can help to change their impact on the planet. The tips may be too basic for someone who has been living a more sustainable lifestyle for some time. The information is not in-depth. if you really are planning on trying your hand at raising livestock go talk with some folks who are actually raising livestock before you dive into it. There are tips for urban dwellers as well. There are many recipes for baby food, household cleaners, and other treats. There are tips on urban bee keeping and growing blueberry bushes in a container. I like the tips for making a back yard barbeque in a recycled clay pot and for making homemade fly paper. I’ve never tried that one before!
